Cotswold Tour from Chipping Campden

Updated: Feb 14, 2020

Staying in Chipping Campden & want to take a Cotswold Tour?

Lucy & Richard Lambert have created two wonderful Cotswold day trips & the great news is that they are the only Cotswold Tour company that offers free collection (& return) from Chipping Campden!

Chipping Campden is a small market town known for its long elegant curved High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. Beautifully preserved and full of history, in the centre of the High Street stands the iconic Market Hall built in 1627, now in the care and ownership of the National Trust.

Once of the most celebrated previous residents was a gentleman called Sir Baptist Hicks. He was an extremely wealthy silk merchant, it is said that during his life he loaned the royal family money. Hick's invested a huge amount of money into the town, building a cart wash, a collection of alms-houses for the poor along with investing money in St James' Church. St James' Church is the town’s most visible landmark, is one of the greatest ‘wool’ churches in the Cotswolds, built with money from the medieval wool trade. In 1613, Sir Baptist Hicks began work on a wonderful manor house in Chipping Campden. Unfortunately not long after the building was complete, Royalist soldiers during the Civil War were ordered to march on Worcester, to join the battle (which became the last battle of the English civil war) they had been staying at the manor house however repaid Sir Baptist Hicks hospitality by burning the house to the ground.

The Arts & Crafts movement also had a positive impact on Chipping Campden, you can visit the Court Barn Museum near St James Church & the Old Silk Mill in the centre to learn more about CR Ashbee & the Arts & Crafts movement. Chipping Campden also hosts some unusual events, the most famous being the Cotswold Olimpicks. Founded by Captain Robert Dover in the 17th century and still celebrated every year at Dover's Hill on the outskirts of the town. The Cotswold Olimpicks (& yes that's the right spelling!) is a mix of quirky sports & games.

The great news is there is a fantastic selection of hotels & B&B's in Chipping Campden & Cotswolds Guided Tours also offer a free collection & return service here too!
